Flowers and Children

As you look at a field of flowers you appeciate their beauty as a group but as you look closer you appreciate each flower for its uniqueness-its shape, color, and size. The observant might also notice how the colors complement and accentuate each other. You also notice the progress of each flower as it blooms in its season. You come to anticipate when each flower will come-the crocus in the spring, the lily in the summer, and the mums in the fall.
A classroom is much like a field of flowers. You first take note of the whole group and then notice a few more outgoing, vibrant, or unusual students. As you look for student's uniqueness you notice their preferences, gender, personality, talents, culture, friendships, and "what makes them tick." You learn to appreciate and love each child for who they are. A good teacher can then help each student feel safe and valued. They can tailor the lessons to interest the students and teach them in ways that interest different types of learners. The teacher can assist each student in progressing at their own level and developing their talents.
